Marine, Army staffs ordered to Kuwait

The Pentagon has issued orders to the Army's V Corps and 1st Marine Expeditionary Force to deploy headquarters staffs to Kuwait, marking the first nonroutine dispatch of conventional ground forces to the Persian Gulf region in anticipation of possible military action against Iraq, defense officials said yesterday. Rumsfeld Orders War Plans Redone for Faster Action

Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld said today that he had ordered the military's regional commanders to rewrite all of their war plans to capitalize on precision weapons, better intelligence and speedier deployment. That way, he said, the military could begin combat operations on less notice and with far fewer troops than thought possible — or even wise — before the Sept. 11 attacks. [read more]
