![]() Palm Tree Forest, Costa Mesa California
In most places, when you see a large tree, you know that it's pretty much grown there from a seed or sapling. In most places. Not in LA. They are transplanted that size. The palm fronds are trimmed and tied when the are put in place.

![]() I finally uploaded some pictures to Flickr. What got me to jump in was a thread in the Strobist Flickr group, which is related to the Strobist Blog. Strobist is the place to learn lighting. It was a thread inviting people to show pictures of their simple studio spaces. I had just finished a PVC and white trash bag light tent. This a picture of it in action. I have cardboard gobos up to keep the direct strobe light off the camera. There are two Vivitar 285HVs. Check out the Ghetto studio set for more pictures of the setup. I need to take some more pictures of the light tent. I need to replace the cardboard with foamcore which can act as a reflector and I can hang a third strobe from above. I want to work on bathing the object in an even light. Then I can play with removing lights.

![]() Costa Mesa, California, trail and stream
All the rivers and streams in the Los Angles area are pretty much like this — concrete drainage ditches. What is scary is that when there is rain, and when there is rain there is *rain*, this will fill up. When I lived around here in the mid 1980s I wanted to do a series: The Rivers and Streams of LA. I didn't have the time or equipment.
