Elizabeth Edwards, wife of John Edwards, who ran for Vice
President on the Kerry/Edwards ticket, has just written
a book. For all you who've come to my shows since October
2002 -- you know that I do a knitting circle before each
concert. In late September 2004 I started knitting a beautiful
prism yarn scarf for Elizabeth Edwards (the color was
soft pink "tea rose" and I added silver and
gold sequins here and there) -- what I thought I was doing
was knitting a gift for her during the run-up to the presidential
election -- I felt sure the Kerry/Edwards would win and
I thought it would be fun to give Elizabeth a scarf with
what I thought would be all those hectic, happy memories.
Well,
as you know, the election went the other way, and Elizabeth
was diagnosed with breast cancer a week before the election
(but it wasn't announced til right after). I remember
it so vividly -- the day after the election I flew to
Toronto to do a show with Tom Paxton -- we both joked
about flying to Canada the day AFTER Bush was re-elected
-- the knitting circle I had at that show was very different,
as each knitter took Elizabeth's scarf and prayed for
her good health as they added their stitches, instead
of the prior circles where we thought we were knitting
in 'congratulations!' rows. Live and learn.
When
the scarf was finished I sent it by FedEx to Elizabeth
in North Carolina -- but politicians' offices couldn't
open the package because of crazy mail security problems
-- people sending dangerous chemicals via the mail --
I'm sure you remember. I sent it via FedEx for that reason,
thinking it would have all that paperwork, but they still
had to verify it wasn't something bad. Her office contacted
me, asking what it was, was it safe to open. I assured
them it was, they did -- and I'm so happy to see not only
that she wears it, but that she has written about it in
her book.
I
am part-way through (have to speed-read it during my travels
this weekend so I can finish it in time to give it away).
It's so inspiring -- please buy it, and when you are done
reading it, pass it along to someone who needs to hear
what she has to say about healing, life, community, and
all the other things we so need to connect with at this
time in our history.
Love,
Christine

SAVING
GRACES
Finding solace and strength from friends and strangers
by Elizabeth Edwards © 2006 Broadway Books, NYC
|
As the treatment drew to a close, I was also closing
our life in Washington, packing and labeling and
throwing out. I packed away some of the gifts I
had gotten from strangers and from friends, from
supporters of John and supporters of other candidates,
from survivors and from the families of those who
had lost their fight. One present -- one I wear
today -- encapsulates all of these people, all that
I believe about the innumerable, amorphous, wonderful
"us." It came from Christine Lavin, a
singer-songwriter to whom we had listened for years.
I heard her once on NPR -- it may have been 1992
-- and I did what we all do, I went to the CD store
and I said I think they said Christine Lavin. Lavin,
could that be right? Can you help me find something
by her? From that point she became one of the constants
in our family. She is funny and poignant, and she
wasn't a stranger to finding grace in an unpretentious
gift. I remember reading a liner note somewhere
about the pleasure she took when Andrea Marcovicci
-- whose voice I also love -- sang one of her songs.
I already liked a woman who would take pleasure
in this.
In
the package from Christine Lavin was a scarf. I've
gotten lots of beautiful scarves, and this is certainly
a beautiful scarf, but more wonderful is the story
of this scarf. Christine had taken it with her on
tour, and she had asked women in her audiences to
work on it, to knit a little. John and I had seen
her sing at the Cat's Cradle in Corrboro once, and
as I read her letter, I imagined that scarf making
its way through an audience like that Carrboro audience.
This scarf was everything I believed in. It was
a gesture -- not a difficult gesture, but a thoughtful
one. It was the counterpart to including the bag
boy in the conversation. It was remembering to say
hello to the child, not just the adult. It was thanking
the referee after the game. It was pulling people
in because you believe in the grace a community
gives each of us. Anyone who thought to do it, to
reach out to others and bring them into this gesture,
could have done it, but too few know the blessings
a simple gesture actually brings. This scarf is
Christine's gift at the same time that it is the
gift of all those women whose names I'll never know.
And it is, also at the same time, something in which
I can literally wrap myself and something in which
I can figuratively wrap myself, this huge community
of people -- spread out among the towns she toured
-- people who were pulling for me and who believed
in the strength of that tiny knot they tied.

Publicly Apologizes To Craig Carothers
Tonight on the mainstage of the Falcon Ridge Folk Festival
I spontaneously brought Craig Carothers out of the crowd
to do a song he wrote that I was going to sing. I figure
he does it best so why not???
I didn't realize that by doing that he is now ineligible
in the 'Emerging Artist' showcase that he drove all the
way from Nashville to be part of. I just didn't know the
rules. I totally screwed it up for him. I meant well but
we all know the road to hell is paved with good intentions.
Please visit Craig's website:
www.craigcarothers.com. He is such a fine songwriter.
I was trying to help. I got him disqualified. What was
I thinking?

I
went to see "An
Inconvenient Truth" tonight, the Al Gore film
about global warming -- an 8 PM showing on a Friday night
in Manhattan and the theater was PACKED. We were all surprised
there'd be that many seeing such a sober documentary on
a Friday night. It's so well done. At the end of the film
it gives suggestions of things we can do: "recommend
your friends go see this film" (that's what I'm doing
here), "if you're a parent, think about the world
we are leaving our children and grandchildren," "if
you're a kid, tell your parents to get involved."
There WERE kids in the audience (approximately age 10+)
-- this would be such a good family film to take in together.
Yes, there are some hard truths here, but it's not a hopeless
situation. When you consider how heartbreaking it must
have been for Al Gore to lose the presidential race --
he had every right to be pissed off and retire from public
life -- but to use his knowledge and influence in such
a constructive way after such a devastating defeat is
truly inspiring. I give him -- and this film -- 4 stars.

On
the flip side, if global warming is FREAKING YOU OUT and
you want to truly escape the horrors of modern life, get
to the Marriott Marquis Theater to see the screamingly
smart and funny musical "The
Drowsy Chaperone." I am embarrassed to tell you
how many times I have seen it already (because I'm not
through! I must see it again and again again!). It has
won more Tonys than any other show this season. Once you
see it, you'll be doing "I am Aldolpho"
impressions for years. If you are visiting my website,
you must like my music, and if you like my music, then
you are the discerning kind of music lover who is going
to LOVE this show! And if you
really want to make it a truly magical night from start
to finish (and you have a lotta cash to throw around or
you're in complete despair over the Bush Administration)
have dinner at 6 PM upstairs at The View Restaurant --
it slowly spins around 47 floors above the street -- I'm
talking about the sit-down View, not the upstairs buffet
(that's OK, but not nearly as special). I can even tell
you to ask to be served by Tracy -- she's a wonderful
singer who works as a waitress at The View. You can make
a reservation online by going to www.opentable.com
and then on the restaurant list, scroll down til you see
"The View Restaurant." You have a lovely dinner
watching the sunset, the Chrysler Building, the Empire
State Building, the skyline of New Jersey (it's pretty!),
then go down to the third floor to see "The Drowsy
Chaperone." There couldn't be a more perfect night
anywhere (unless you go upstairs and have dinner afterwards).
Imagine: dinner and a show in the same skyscraper. P.S.
The cast album of "The Drowsy Chaperone" has
just been released -- it's brilliantly done. Doesn't give
away any of the surprises in the show, the CD booklet
is sheer genius, and there's two hilarious bonus tracks.

Christine asks: Are you
a man or a woman who recently had your heart smashed to
pieces by someone it turns out all your friends hated
anyway? Or do you have a friend who is wallowing in neverending
emotional agony over a boyfriend/girlfriend/husband/wife
who left them -- but you are secretly happy because you
hated this horrible person who done them wrong? If you
can answer "Yes" to either question -- have
I got a song for you. In fact, two songs: "Stop Your

Your Sobbing SHE'S An Idiot (Happy Dance)."

You

people everywhere I am making it available here as a free
mp3 download. Please send this to everyone you know who
needs help getting over a breakup. The
lyrics are posted here so you can even sing and dance
along (which helps speed up the healing process). People
have asked me what exactly is 'the happy dance' that I
sing about here, and the best way to describe the dance
move (it's only 2 seconds long) is this: raise both fists
shoulder high, shake them for a second as you run in place.
There's not a whole lot you can do in 2 seconds, and any
variation on that basic move is enthusiastically encouraged.

Christine says, "I recently visited the people
who are building 'Eldershire' in upstate New York, a non-institutional
residental alternative for aging gracefully in a vibrant
community. While there I also met people from Colorado,
England, and Australia who are planning to also do this,

Free mp3 download of
"What Was I Thinking in 2006"
Saturday
night February 18th, Claudia Schmidt and I performed at
the Fitzgerald Theater in St. Paul, a show taped by Minnesota
Public Radio (Claudia was fabulous, sounds better than
ever). The day before I spent 18 hours in various aiports
trying to get there (wind storms), and while waiting came
up with a new ending for "What Was I Thinking?"
The people at MPR and the Fitzgerald were kind enough
to send me the mp3 of that song -- the first verse is
the same, but the second, third, fourth and fifth verse
are new [hint: Dick Cheney is
in the final verse] -- it's a parade of recently ridiculous
true-to-life 'what were they thinking?' musical moments
for you to download and enjoy!

Here's
the latest news -- a high school choir in Michigan contacted
me for the sheet music to "Cold Pizza For Breakfast"
because they are going to sing it in concert -- I stopped
doing it years ago because the bridge was outdated, but
they didn't mind, still wanted to do it.
So
I rewrote the bridge to bring it up to date, and recorded
it for them -- so I figure, hey, I could do this song
again now that it has a new bridge. It's not nearly as
mean as it was when that part was about Jean Harris and
Herman Tarnower, the Scarsdale Diet doctor. And I hope
Oprah is flattered!
So
here's a free mp3 of it -- a high res mp3, and a low res

Attention
All Knitters!
I took a knitting
lesson on October 1st , 2002, here in New York and I
want to publicly thank Larry in Fort Collins, Connie
in Denver, and that unknown woman at the end of the
Denver concert -- the one that I mistakenly accused
of stealing my knitting -- for helping me out, adding
rows to my knitting and fixing my mistakes. And it gave
me an idea:
If you knit
and are coming to my show, why not bring your knitting
with you, come a little early and we can have a knitting
circle either in the lobby, or backstage (depending
on the venue) before the show. Although I am a rank
beginner, I really like it, and would like to meet other
knitters who can help me to learn faster (and guide
me back on track when I make mistakes). And if you bring
your knitting, can you bring an extra set of needles
because maybe there will be someone there who would
like to learn how to do it and you could help show them?
I won't be able to knit during intermission (I'm working
on something else at that point of the show) but you
could continue it then, and at the end I could come
out and see how much progress you made during the night.
Should
crocheters be included? Or should it just be knitters?
I don't want to discriminate, but knitting is what
I am doing. Oh heck, we should let crocheters in.
Am I skipping anybody? Knitters, spread the word.
Please
link here
& print out the Official Invitation, that pops
up, to show the management at the House /Venue on
the show day!
Be There 1 hour before the show!

This is the biggest surprise of the year -- actor Jeff
Daniels has proven himself over and over again to be
a first rate actor, and now we discover he's a first
rate singer/songwriter, too. If you love Steve Goodman's
music, you'll love Jeff's -- sparkling guitar playing,
clever songs side-by-side with moving ballads. The profits
from the CD go to help support the Purple Rose Theater

way to support the arts AND add a fabulous new CD to

Here's
the 15th anniversary edition of
"On A Winter's Night".

Scott
Alarik of The Boston Globe writes:
"Fifteen
years ago, Christine Lavin used her rising star-power
to assemble a lovely, literate anthology of contemporary
folk songs reflecting the lamp-lit, dark-chocolate moods
of winter. Its startling success, and the series of
national tours it spawned, helped ignite a songwriter
revival that is still going strong. The best testament
to this warmhearted classic's enduring importance is
the large number of contributors still enjoying vital
careers, helping to make our real lives sound like the
stuff of ballads. This fully remastered expanded edition
includes newly recorded tracks [including Christine's
"The Kind Of Love You Never Recover From"],
and five bonus songs."

ANTIQUES

13
songs, a brilliant blend of folk/pop/jazz guitar with
inspired, sophisticated lyrics. Some call it "Celtic

-- whatever you call him, he's unique, and the ONLY
way to get this album is to send a check for $18 (which

Songwriter
Makes TV History
The TV show "Monk" is the creation of songwriter
Andy Breckman, who is on both "Laugh Tracks"
(the opening track) and on the Tribute Disks
(I think it's the final closing track). His albums
are on Gadfly
-- he has been a favorite of the folk world for a
long, long time (though he rarely performs live these
days).
His TV show "Monk" has created a bit of TV
history -- a show that started out in cable on the
USA Network, but immediately got snatched up
by ABC, so it actually runs on both. Until
"Monk" came along, shows went from network
to cable, but this show is so good it turns normal
TV procedure on its head. The show stars Tony Shaloub
-- formerly the taxi driver from "Wings," but
most recently the pawn shop owner in "Men In Black,"
(the alien who gets his head shot off and it instantly
grows back), and also the 'mellow' dude in the hilarious
"Galaxy Quest."
Way to go, Andy! Way to go, Tony!
Update!!! Tony Shaloub won an Emmy for
his portrayal of Monk!

[The Pilot
(first) episode is available on DVD -- I purchased
it and have been turning "normal" people
on to the phenomena called Monk!" .. zoe]
An Aunt Patsy Update
Aunt Patsy is on Monk! Aunt Patsy describes what happens
to her on "Monk" in the episode "Monk
& the Missing Granny." In her own words,
"Yes — I get kidnapped — or granny-napped
right at the start! Of course the felony turns out
to be such a ludicrous white collar ccrime which only
the obsessive Monk could solve."
So check your local listings for the episode "Monk
& the Missing Granny," and watch my Aunt
Patsy in action!

The Subway Series is a collection of songs inspired
by the grand metropolis of New York City.
There are updated versions of some of her most popular
songs, including "Good Thing He Can't Read My Mind"
and "Shopping Cart Of Love: The Play," plus new
songs never before recorded, "Moon-Rising Tide/We Are
The Lucky Ones," and "If We Had No Moon" (a
studio version of this will be released later this year
on an album produced by the National Space Society).
This special show (68 minutes long), performed live at
Fordham University, is Christine's Valentine to the
City that to this day continues to inspire songwriters.

Speaking
of Recipes...
Join Us In Our New Project:
"Bake While You Sleep"
One
of my favorite Recipes ("petit pan au chocolat")
starts with overnight steps. So, I'm inviting you all
to contribute "tried-and-true" recipes, that
you can personally vouch for, that begin with, or as with
the forgotten cookies, its entire cooking process is overnight
in an oven that is shut off.
Rule:
no crock pot stuff, just stuff that can happen while you
are sleeping. Wouldn't this make a great cookbook?
Email Zoe (zoe@christinelavin.com)
your recipes (tempting photos are welcome too), along
with your name and home town, and we'll add them to our
site!

It's Important To Have Good Music
Playing In The Kitchen!
My
new favorite baking disk is "Waltz of the Wallflowers
(A Dysfunctional Duet)" by the Chicago duo Jacquie
Manning and Rich Prezioso, "Small
Potatoes."
This album is smart, funny, wistful, hip -- crosses many
musical boundaries (traditional, Celtic, jazz, even American
theater) -- is beautifully and simply produced. Jacquie
and Rich wrote most of the tunes, but also strut their
stuff covering standards like "Hummin' to Myself"
and even a Grace Slick gem, "Lather."
You can learn more about "Small Potatoes" at their
website, smallpotatoesmusic.com.
The first song on this album is so amazing (it's
the title track; click here for a sample) that if
you know of a man and woman who sing together and are
looking for material, you won't find anything better than
this -- it's up there with the best Rodgers & Hammerstein
songs you've ever heard.
OK, stop
reading now and visit their site!
