Civilian casualties update

  Wednesday   March 12   2008       11: 21 PM

I had just barely managed to (finally) fall asleep, when the phone rang about 8:00ish this AM. Being on "WSH /Mom alert status", I picked it up and SURPRISE!!! Be still my beating heart! My eldest nephew, Gregg, had landed here in SEATAC, and was scant miles away.

He works for EFCO (or is it Fed-ex or is it or..well consider this a true brain-fart on my part). Suffice, he's in a pretty huge corporate space in Iowa, and Gregg impressed these folk PDQ with his work ethic, and leadership - that's our boy!]. This past week, he's been doing some "installation work" or "set up" work with a co-worker in many different states, and, voila, he's here in Kent, about 2-2.5 hours away, until Sunday when they head out to their next stop.

We will absolutely be catching up with him on Saturday, and I am so thrilled. I really need a dose of family right now...and I can't wait to see him!!!

Here comes the leaky-eye part -- he wants to see Mom!!!!

I will certainly show him some snaps, and some video of Mom, taken surreptitiously, that way he'll hear her speech patterns, and will have some clue as to how she looks now, so no big surprises. I showed a piece of a vid to Robin of the Gallery Salon, and she said, "she's so GERRY", and she said she hadn't changed much at all in the looks department to her eye.

Of course no teeth can be odd, but Jellybean (Mom) has good bone structure and it can be overlooked some times. She's also really rail thin, but she has sweats, and layers of clothing on, so it's not readily apparent, but I will prepare Gregg, and give him pointers on how to respond to her incoherent speech. I hope to assure him that Gordy and I will intercede, or bail him out, if it gets overwhelming for him...but I doubt it will be required. Two huge factors to make this a decent visit, is that Gregg is a funny and sensitive guy, and can intuit a lot. And Mom, well, she should be so tickled to see him that any blues, and /or behavioural, and /or pain issues will take a back seat to this treasured visit.

If Mom acts at all like she was on Sunday, aka our "MomsDay" [seeing Gerry & Doris both makes G and I so happy and warm and fuzzy] it will be loverly and warm. Mom was being so loving, and calm, and funny, and eating oh so gently and properly. She was truly happy, heck she said it out loud, "I'm so happy", and all the while she was teasing us, holding and kissing hands, and twinking her baby blues. This is what I wish for them, that kind of visit, it will be a truly good experience for Gregg with good memories if she is like she was Sunday!

But for Mom, this will absolutely be heaven on earth! She may or may not recognize him at first (or maybe at all, there is no anticipating that), but she'll absolutely love this sweet, funny, cute, young guy visiting her, and she'll feel so special!

OTOH, there could be a recognition ASAP, one never truly knows. She and Dad were very much a part of GMG's growing up, they did a lot of "day-care" or "baby-sitting" with him, they even took him to Disney World! They were really close, so maybe she'll get that spark of recognition, hopehope for both their sakes.

We all are called by many different names "du moment" by Mom, and her pronouns are not gender specific, so I have to let him know not to take any of that personal. When one is feeling strong, the visit can be a puzzle v. frustration, trying to suss her out, losing words but checking out the intonation, the face, and the body language -- but this is a true treat for me and G, but an amazingly huge huge huge loving event for Mom. Family! Ahhhhhhhhhh. New stuff is caving in on me righ tnow, so I can surely use family time and touch.

Thank you Gregg!
